Are you fond of video games and play stations online? Be aware! There might be hackers around. Hacking is one of the most recurring phenomena witnessed by many internet users. Hackers cannot just get access to credit card numbers but also your name and home address. Engin Kirda, associate professor at Northeastern University discusses the largest loss of private information as a consequence of hacking.
According to Kirda, hackers get easy access due to simple programming mistakes on the company’s website. They usually attack databases, mail servers, and other critical components. Many cases involve tricks, where the user is asked to access or download some corrupt software. This paves a way to reach the hidden data in a setup.
Sometimes, after the attack, it takes time for the company to start with the normal functioning of its software. This can take place due to its complex system or if the system itself is poorly designed. There is also a need to make sure that the system does not face a similar attack again. Kirda mentions the PlayStation network of Sony which was attacked and was down for almost three weeks. Also, companies as successful as these take a lot of time to ensure their system’s safety as it also affects their reputation in the online markets.
To avoid hackers to engage in your data, one can log in with a password different from those which lock your Gmail or Yahoo accounts. Kirda says, “It has been reported that many passwords have been stolen”. Also, one needs to check credit card statements if any of your bank account’s information is stored on websites.
In a world where we live on the internet, it becomes very important to work on techniques that can detect software viruses to prevent future attacks.
