College: The big move

College: The big move

The first time an adolescent gets a taste of adulthood is when they move to college and start living on their own. It is a fact well known that college opens doors that high school doesn’t. And college can change kids and shape them in ways that are quite unimaginable. Not only does it help them grow as a person, but it also encourages them to give others space to grow with them, which is a very important life lesson.

College helps students develop into mature, responsible, and independent adults. However, they’re not entirely on their own: colleges offer students many kinds of help making this transition, such as tutoring and academic advising as well as counselling and other support.

Such is the experience of many students who go to Northeastern University for the first time. Students are seen carrying huge suitcases, with their parents trailing behind them. The rooms are usually shared between two students. This is the first hurdle that the kids have to cross, building a healthy bond with their roommate. Although, technology has made this step fairly easy as roommates can exchange phone numbers, even before they meet in person, as soon as the room allotments are made available online.

Understandably, the parents are also the ones who have to do the adjusting. Most students complain about their parents nagging them about the smallest of things even after they go to college, which is just another way of them trying to let their kids know that they still care about them and miss them deeply.

Since the college environment is mostly engaging, the pain and separation anxiety starts to fade away as the days go by. As most of the experienced college students say, it is best to walk around the new place, explore a little, force yourself to stay out of your room as much as you can. Being around other people in a similar situation is the easiest way to adapt to life away from home.
